The Massachusetts Legislature acts on legislation impacting the built environment and public investment in civil infrastructure. The BSCES Legislative Fellowship was established in 2001 to provide technical civil engineering resources to the Massachusetts Legislature (Massachusetts House of Representatives and State Senate) as lawmakers and their staffs formulate public policy and shape legislation impacting the Commonwealth's built environment and infrastructure. The fund helps to provide an annual stipend to support the Legislative Fellow. It is the goal of BSCES to select Legislative Fellows at mid-career; those with engineering and project management experience to effectively advise the Legislature on technical engineering issues and to help craft legislation; and with time left in their careers to use the experience and knowledge they gain as Legislative Fellow to the benefit of the Society and the civil engineering profession. The Program is not a lobbying effort for the civil engineering societies nor is the Legislative Fellow a lobbyist.
Currently, the Government Affairs and Professional Practice Committee oversees the use of the fund to ensure it is utilized for its intended purpose.
