Speaker:
Christopher N. Grey, PE
Senior Project Manager, Simpson Gumpertz and Heger
Facade assessments are necessary for building owners to understand the condition of the facade and determine whether repairs are needed. Many of the shortcomings of direct inspection, either from the ground or by aerial lifts, are overcome through digital imaging using Small Unmanned Aerial Systems (sUAS). Facade assessments using thermal imaging enable detection of envelope leakage issues on building enclosures. UAS technology have made this practice safer and more accurate, cost effective, and accessible. Infrared scans that would have normally taken many hours to perform can now be performed in minutes while providing better quality, more comprehensive infrared images of the building enclosures.
This fourth in a series of BSCES Program Committee-sponsored webinars featuring the use of innovative technologies in engineering explores how the AEC industry has implemented sUAS to conduct facade assessments with a focus on thermal imaging scans of buildings. Christopher will discuss some of the nuances with using sUAS around building enclosures, and the differences compared to handheld scanning techniques. Through a series of case studies, he will review industry standards and guidelines and share common project challenges and opportunities.
