Chelsea, MA 02150
3:00 PM-5:00 PM Tour
Speaker:
Andrew Giocondi, PE, ENV SP
Project Manager, Skanska USA Civil
The Chelsea Viaduct (aka The Chelsea Curves) carries 63,000 vehicles a day on US Route 1 through Chelsea, Massachusetts. It’s the most popular way into Boston for commuters from the North Shore, and it carries the third largest MBTA bus route serving 11,800 passengers every weekday. The rehabilitation of this three-quarters of a mile section of Route 1 focused on addressing structural deficiencies with a new 75-year lifespan for the viaduct. The completion of this project represents the replacement of 15 percent of the structurally deficient bridge decks in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
This tour will focus on the design and constructability challenges faced throughout the course of the project. The project team will give insight into how VDC (virtual design and construction) was employed to streamline the construction/design process, providing solutions before issues occurred. The team will also speak to the accelerated bridge construction methods used to build this 76-span project in just 24 months. The tour will illustrate the logistics and planning required to install 313 prefabricated bridge units while working in one of the most densely populated communities in the country.
