Please join us for an evening celebrating 175 years of BSCES advancing engineering knowledge and the professional growth of its members. BSCES will recognize volunteer leaders, present annual awards, celebrate ASCE Life Members, and introduce our newest Honorary Members, Dr. Luciana Burdi, Intl. Assoc. AIA, CCM, MCPPO, NAC, Director of Capital Programs and Environmental Affairs, Massachusetts Port Authority and William H. Hover, PE, retired from GZA GeoEnvironmental, Inc.. One of the evening’s highlights will be a keynote presentation by 2010 BSCES Honorary Member Frederick P. Salvucci, former Massachusetts Secretary of Transportation.
Keynote Speaker:
Frederick P. Salvucci
Senior Lecturer & Research Associate, MIT Center for Transportation & Logistics
Former Massachusetts Secretary of Transportation
Frederick Salvucci is a civil engineer with an interest in infrastructure, urban transportation, and public transportation. He has over 30 years of contextual transportation experience. He served as transportation advisor to Boston Mayor Kevin White, and then as Secretary of Transportation under Massachusetts Governor Michael Dukakis. In those roles he participated in much of the transportation planning and policy formulation in the Boston urbanized area and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, with particular emphasis on the expansion of the transit system, the development of the financial and political support for the Central Artery/Tunnel Project, and the design of implementation strategies to comply with the Clean Air Act consistent with economic growth.
Fred will speak about improving infrastructure, building political will to finance needed improvements, the role of the federal government over the history of the US since the beginning of the republic, the importance of meeting the spirit of environmental protection and social equity goals, and the critical but nonvisible role of engineers in the process. He will focus on the Big Dig and the Green Line extension, as well as discuss the $2 billion Allston Multimodal Project, which was just awarded $335 million from USDOT in a grant for connecting communities. He will also discuss the threat of increasing tidal surges and heavy rainfall and the need to build the political will to meet this emerging challenge with both seacoast and inland infrastructure investment.
