The failure risk of a distressed pipeline can be reduced through several measures including pressure control, spot repair of individual high-risk pipes, rehabilitation of pipeline sections with a high rate of occurrence of distressed pipes, or cathodic protection of an electrically continuous pipeline. Repair/rehabilitation methods include replacement of individual pipes or sections of pipeline; lining a section of pipeline with steel; slip-lining with smaller-diameter steel, HDPE, or HOBAS pipe; internal CFRP strengthening; and external post-tensioning. The evaluation to determine whether spot repair should be used or longer sections of pipeline should be rehabilitated is typically based on a hydraulic/structural/economic analysis. Such an analysis compares the current cost of rehabilitation of a section with the present value of the spot repair performed on pipes currently with high risk of failure and those pipes whose risk of failure becomes high in the future.
This presentation will identify common standalone structural repair methods and discuss the pros and cons of each. We will discuss factors to consider when comparing alternatives, including hydraulic performance, dewatering requirements, excavation and public impacts, and construction considerations. We will present a project example to demonstrate a practical approach to selecting the optimal repair method for a pipeline.
