Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) combines civil engineering, surveying, and geophysical aspects and utilizes various means for gathering utility information, varying from document research to advanced geophysical technologies. ASCE/UESI/CI 38-22 and ASCE/UESI/CI 75-22 provide guidelines and standards related to SUE. This presentation introduces these guidelines and discusses considerations for implementing SUE on a project. These considerations include the sensitivity of the proposed scope to actual subsurface utility conditions, acceptable levels of risk, cost, and other considerations. We will discuss utilizing SUE and the related considerations through project examples.
