Virtual Meeting – Zoom platform
Times 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm
Speaker: Hayat Tazir, PE,Principal Bridge Engineer, T.Y. Lin International
This presentation will provide an overview of the design and construction of the Samuel de Champlain Bridge in Montréal. The Samuel de Champlain Bridge is a landmark of Montréal, measuring an astounding 3.4km long, featuring an asymmetric cable-stay main span with a 170m-high tower, and carrying two 3-lane corridors of vehicular traffic, a central transit corridor for future light-rail, and a multi-use path. The bridge was designed and constructed in approximately 48 months, despite the severe winters of Montréal. To meet the fast-track schedule, design decisions included Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) techniques, such as maximizing the use of segmental construction and precast deck panels. Other solutions included the selection of steel over concrete for the pier caps and adjusting the cable-stayed bridge closure joint location. Concrete elements, including the pier legs and the lower legs of the single tower, were precast in segments, assembled on site and connected using post-tensioning bars and tendons. These design and construction choices, along with innovative erection sequencing, contributed to the minimizing of onsite construction time to meet the challenging bridge delivery schedule.
