This presentation discusses the principles of site-specific site response analyses and current developments impacting geotechnical earthquake engineering practice for all projects in seismically prone areas. The presentation briefly discusses tectonic environments commonly encountered in the U.S. and ground motion intensity measures with the associated levels of uncertainty. The talk introduces ground motion prediction equations (formerly known as attenuation relationships) and issues related to the selection of ground motions for nonlinear site response analyses. Building codes such as the International Building Code (IBC) define six site categories for seismic design of structures, which are based on site classification defined by the National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program (NEHRP). These categories use the average shear wave velocity over the top 30 meters of the soil deposit and thus help in the selection of simplified procedures for calculating the design spectra. It is generally believed that these simplified design spectra are conservative, and site-specific analyses including soil nonlinearity may yield more realistic seismic demands. This is particularly important for cases in which some form of ground improvement has been performed and the original site classification may no longer be applicable. In addition, projects are becoming increasingly complex and structural response can no longer be considered in isolation. The presentation then focuses on the description and selection of soil properties for numerical simulations; and some examples of recent practice including soil structure interaction analyses. Finally, a brief discussion of developments in the areas of multidirectional shaking and site-specific investigation for NEHRP F sites will be presented.
