The 2023 Northeast ASCE Student Symposium and Competitions, hosted by Northeastern University and Wentworth Institute of Technology, will be held here in Boston in late April. This annual event is well recognized among the engineering schools nationally and offers an outstanding opportunity for students to practice their engineering skills.
The event consists of two main competitions, Steel Bridge and Concrete Canoe. For the Steel Bridge competition, students are to follow certain design and budget criteria to build a Steel Bridge. The bridge structures are judged for strength, weight, build time, and aesthetics. For the concrete canoe competition, students will follow an application specific design criteria to build a canoe out of concrete. Canoes are judged on their esthetics, design report, weight, and several races.
Back in 2016, the Wentworth Institute of Technology and Northeastern University also hosted this event which was quite successful. Like the 2016 event, Northeastern University will again host the Steel Bridge Competition in Matthews Arena on Saturday, April 22. Wentworth Institute of Technology will hold the Concrete Canoe Competition races on Lake Cochituate, in Natick, on Sunday April 23, with esthetics display and design report presentations being at Northeastern on Saturday April 22.
The 2023 Northeast Symposium will start on Friday, April 21 and carry through the weekend. About 15 universities from New England and Canada will participate in the symposium. On Friday 21st the Daniel W. Mead paper presentations will occur, with students presenting on the topic of “How does an engineer balance regulations and ethics?” Presentations will take place at Wentworth.
We believe this event is an outstanding networking opportunity for students and professionals. We would like to invite companies and individuals who are interested in sponsoring this event to reach out to the symposium committee at ASCENortheastRegionalSymposium@gmail.com.
