Craig Steigerwalt, PE, PSP, PMP, CCM, Construction Consultant, Exponent, and Engineering Management Group Chair
Tis the time of the year once again when we start bringing out our winter jackets, beanies, and gloves from our basements and start preparing for the winter season ahead. But before we start to fuss about the shorter days and colder nights, the BSCES Engineering Management Group (EMG) is here to warm you up. I realize the EMG has been quiet these past few months, however, it’s time to turn up the heat. We are currently planning an educational meeting with an MBTA’s GLX’s program manager to discuss risk mitigation techniques on the project as well as lessons learned that can be shared on other big transit projects (e.g., Hudson Tunnel Project in NYC). In addition to the technical meeting, we’ve also started planning for our annual Joseph C. Lawler Engineering Management Lecture in early 2025. Please be on the lookout in the next few weeks for specifics related to the upcoming meetings.
Since it’s been a while since you’ve heard from us in EMG, I thought it would be good to share our mission with those who might not be aware of who we are and what we strive to do. Our mission, “to promote the growth of ascending engineers in management practices including forecasting, project controls, and business operations” speaks volumes in today’s workplace. In today’s times of high interest rates, increased competition, and strong reliance on foreign suppliers, our core mission could not be of greater importance. Our members want to be able to share experiences with other engineering professionals in the Commonwealth so that we can all become more successful on our projects and in our careers. This is the forum to make that happen.
In addition, our key focus areas of leadership, best practices, and innovative technologies are also ideas keeping members of our C-suites up at night. As the industry continues to figure out how to use AI and other new technologies, we want to be there to help share ideas, so please help me by becoming involved with EMG and helping to share your experiences and lessons learned. Management is being able to pull ideas from all of the team members and executing on the best plan forward, so please help me get information out.
We have several events planned as we enter into the new year, so be sure to keep an eye on the BSCES Events page to register for upcoming tours, presentations, and gatherings. We are always looking for new BSCES members to join the EMG Executive Committee, so if you have any interest in joining, regardless of your level, please contact me at csteigerwalt@exponent.com.
Thank you and I wish you and your loved ones a safe and happy holiday season.
