At the Virtual 171st BSCES Annual Awards Celebration, which was held over Zoom on Thursday, October 29th, the BSCES Board of Government honored the following 2020 award winners. Presiding over the celebration was BSCES Past President Richard Maher, PE.
2020 BSCES Section and Employer Recognition Award Winners
Citizen Engineer Award – presented to a BSCES member or registered professional engineer for outstanding public involvement in local or national legislation, education at all levels, non-profit volunteer organizations, community activities and similar activities improving the image of ASCE, BSCES and civil engineering.
This award was presented to Alicia DiCecca, EIT from Stantec for her years of contributions to the Future City Competition and Public Awareness & Outreach Committee.
Clemens Herschel Award – recognizes an individual who has published a paper, not necessarily published in the BSCES Journal, that have been useful, commendable, and worthy of grateful acknowledgment.
This award was presented to Paul Kirshen, PhD, from UMass Boston for his role as principal investigator on the report entitled “Feasibility of Harbor-wide Barrier Systems: Preliminary Analysis for Boston Harbor.”
College Educator Award – presented to a member of the academic community who inspires and encourages civil engineering students through exceptional teaching and mentorship. Educators empower students to realize full potential and exemplify the profession in their classroom.
This award was presented to Edward Hajduk, DEng, PE, from UMass Lowell for innovative teaching, mentorship, and developing engineering service projects for students at University of Massachusetts Lowell.
Engineer of the Year Award - presented to a BSCES member, with 15 years or more professional experience, who has exhibited extraordinary leadership in the form of managerial leadership, technical excellence, professional integrity, and mentorship of other engineers.
Anthony Ricci, PE, from MassDOT for advocating, encouraging, and transferring knowledge to assure a future generation of skilled engineers.
Government Civil Engineer Award – presented to a BSCES member who is serving as a paid public sector engineer at a federal, state, or municipal agency, department, or Massachusetts authority.
This award was presented to Robert Leger, PE, from Massport for significant achievement and a dedicated career at MassDOT and Massport.
Journalism Award – presented to a journalist or other author who has published one or more articles, papers, books, social media blogs, or film for a non-technical audience that raises awareness of the contributions of the civil engineering profession..
This award was presented to Beth McGinnis-Cavanaugh, from Springfield Technical Community College for numerous articles and media raising awareness of STEM education and the importance of the civil engineering profession.
Pre-College Educator Award – presented to a member of the K-12 education community who integrates engineering topics, particularly civil engineering, in a manner that benefits the profession and may promote students to pursue an engineering career.
This award was presented to Caitlin Wrobel, from Masconomet Regional Middle School for her dedication to teaching and introducing students to engineering problem solving through involvement in the Future City Competition.
Younger Member Award – intended to recognize a member, 35 years of age or less on February 1st in the year of the award, who has made an outstanding contribution to the society.
This award was presented to Andrew Giocondi, PE, from Skanska USA Civil for outstanding contributions to the engineering profession as a Project Manager for Skanska USA Civil and CI Boston Chapter Chair.
President’s Award – presented at the discretion of the President to Section members for their contributions to the engineering profession and especially to the Boston Society of Civil Engineers Section/ASCE.
Three Presidents Awards were presented this year. The first award was presented to Melissa Carter, PE, from Stantec for her dedicated and tireless contributions as chair of the BSCES Committee on Sustainability.
The second President’s Award was presented to Jeff Lewis, PE, from Garofalo & Associates, Inc. for his dedicated and outstanding contributions as chair of the Program Committee.
The third President’s Award was presented to Ronald Burns, PE, from Arcadia Technology, Inc. for his exemplary service and knowledge contributions to the BSCES Sponsorship Program.
Large Employer Recognition Award – recognize those employers with more than 50 employees who commit to providing exceptional opportunities to their engineers. Special recognition will go to those organizations who exhibit exemplary support as evidenced by: encouraging technical and professional growth through continuing education, training, mentoring, project experience, participation in development of technical papers or presentations, and other means; tackling staff quality-of-life issues in the modern workplace; contributing to the community to make a positive impact; encouraging active participation in professional societies such as ASCE/BSCES.
This award was presented to Weston & Sampson, Inc., for encouraging its engineers to actively participate in ASCE and BSCES. Michael Scipione, CEO, accepted this award on behalf of the firm.
Project of the Year Award – presented to a BSCES member and her/his project team who has served in a major role on an innovative, challenging, unique, and/or complex project located in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The majority of the work should have been completed by engineers located within Massachusetts.
This award was presented jointly to Massachusetts Department of Transportation, District 4 and Stantec for the MassDOT Woods Memorial Bridge Project.
Sustainability in Civil Engineering Award – intended to recognize a Massachusetts civil engineering infrastructure project constructed within the last three years that exemplifies the principles of sustainability espoused by the Institute of Sustainable Infrastructure (ISI). Two awards were presented:
The first award was presented to Northeastern University, Skanska USA Civil NE, Payette, and Arup for the ISEC Pedestrian Bridge Project.
The second award was presented to Massachusetts Water Resources Authority and Stantec for the MWRA Wachusett Aqueduct Pumping Station Project.
