At the 173rd BSCES Annual Awards Celebration, which was held at the Royal Sonesta Boston on Monday, June 21, the BSCES Board of Government honored the following 2022 award winners.
2022 BSCES Section Award Winners
Citizen Engineer Award – presented to a BSCES member or registered professional engineer for outstanding public involvement in local or national legislation, education at all levels, non-profit volunteer organizations, community activities and similar activities improving the image of ASCE, BSCES and civil engineering.
This award was presented to Bruce Jacobs, PhD, PE, for improving the civil engineering profession through his outstanding commitment and generosity in service to volunteer organizations.
College Educator Award – presented to a member of the academic community who inspires and encourages civil engineering students through exceptional teaching and mentorship. Educators empower students to realize full potential and exemplify the profession in their classroom.
This award was presented to Raj Kumar Gondle PhD, for exceptional teaching and mentorship of students at the University of Massachusetts Lowell.
Engineer of the Year Award - presented to a BSCES member, with 15 years or more professional experience, who has exhibited extraordinary leadership in the form of managerial leadership, technical excellence, professional integrity, and mentorship of other engineers.
This award was presented to Po-Shang Chen, PE, from C&C Consulting Engineers, LLC for his esteemed career as an educator, leader, and mentor to members of the local engineering community.
Journalism Award – presented to a journalist or other author who has published one or more articles, papers, books, social media blogs, or film for a non-technical audience that raises awareness of the contributions of the civil engineering profession.
This award was presented to Sean Murphy from the Boston Globe for his article entitled “A leaky oil tank could cost a young couple their dream home.”
Horne/Gaynor Public Service Award – recognizes an individual who has published a paper, not necessarily published in the BSCES Journal, that have been useful, commendable, and worthy of grateful acknowledgment.
This award was presented to Dennis Reip, PE, of Stantec, for his long-standing service to his community and commitment to preserving the natural environment.
Pre-College Educator Award – presented to a member of the K-12 education community who integrates engineering topics, particularly civil engineering, in a manner that benefits the profession and may promote students to pursue an engineering career.
This award was presented to John Walker from Boston Latin School for encouraging students to be engineering problem solvers through involvement in the BSCES Model Bridge Competition.
Charles A. Stone & Edwin S. Webster Project of the Year Award – presented to a BSCES member and their project team who has served in a major role on an innovative, challenging, unique, and/or complex project located in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The majority of the work should have been completed by engineers located within Massachusetts.
This award was presented to Andrew Giocondi, PE, Skanska and the Skanska McCourt Joint Venture Project Team for responsible management and employment of innovative methods used in construction of the Chelsea/Route 1 Viaduct Rehabilitation Project, which addressed structural deficiencies and provided a new 75-year design life.
Sustainability in Civil Engineering Award – intended to recognize a Massachusetts civil engineering infrastructure project constructed within the last three years that exemplifies the principles of sustainability espoused by the Institute of Sustainable Infrastructure (ISI).
The award was presented to Greenman-Pedersen, Inc. for the Improvements to Andover’s Playstead Pathway and Parking Project.
Younger Member Award – intended to recognize a member, 35 years of age or less on February 1st in the year of the award, who has made an outstanding contribution to the society.
This award was presented to Chelsea Hoplin, PE, from GEI Consultants, Inc., for her commitment to advancing the geotechnical field and mentoring younger engineers.
President’s Awards – 2021-2022 BSCES President Shallan Fitzgerald also awarded two President’s Awards, which are presented in recognition for service to the Boston Society of Civil Engineers Section/ASCE.
The first award was presented to Reed Brockman, PE, from AECOM, for his tireless and dedicated efforts to advance the BSCES mission of engaging future generations to be engineers.
The second was presented to Kathryn Swanson, PE, from CDM Smith, for her stewardship of the BSCES Awards Committee and willingness to always offer a helping hand.
