Gregory Mirliss, Project Manager, AECOM, BSCES Treasurer and Legislative Fellow Committee Chair
Have you ever wanted to get involved with the Commonwealth’s legislative process but don’t want to campaign? Well, here’s your opportunity to do so – become the next BSCES Legislative Fellow.
The Legislative Fellow is a BSCES member who serves as a technical resource for Massachusetts state legislators. The Legislative Fellow will work with the staff of the Joint Committee on Transportation on current issues that can benefit from the input of an engineer, providing technical expertise, and a different perspective.
As Legislative Fellow you have the ability to solve real world problems at the State House that impact the Commonwealth. Most efforts focus on transportation and infrastructure initiatives but can vary and deal with sustainability, resiliency, and energy conservancy. This highly visible position also provides the participant an opportunity to serve the public while giving back to BSCES and the civil engineering profession.
As Legislative Fellow you will be housed in the office of Joint Committee on Transportation with a desk and direct access to its members and staff. Other benefits include access to State House News Service and State House tours, attending legislative conferences, admittance to the legislative chamber, and the ability to meet and work with other state legislators and their staff. The 2025-2026 BSCES Legislative Fellow will receive a modest stipend that is based on time of service in this role.
Friday, August 30, 2024, is the deadline to apply for the Fellowship year beginning January 2025 and ending on July 31, 2026, the probable end of the legislature’s formal session in 2026. In some cases, for example if the Commonwealth’s budget has not been approved, this formal session and the legislative fellow’s tenure may be extended by up to two months. Legislative Fellows may also be asked to stay on until a legislative matter they have been working on is resolved.
