The Younger Member Group (YMG) is one of BSCES’ technical groups that serves college students and young professionals emerging in the professional workforce. YMG’s mission statement is “to foster the professional growth, ethical awareness, and technical competence of the Section’s younger members. The group organizes and encourages community outreach, supports engineering students at local colleges and universities, and encourages membership and participation in ASCE and BSCES committees, institute chapters, technical groups, and other activities.”

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the YMG Executive Committee meets virtually at 5:30pm on the second Tuesday of every month. The purpose of these meetings is to discuss past and upcoming events and share updates from other technical groups within BSCES. Currently, over 20 young professionals from a variety of disciplines within the civil engineering industry serve on this committee. All younger members who are interested in joining our group are welcome to attend these meetings during which you can meet committee members and expand your network.
Within the YMG, there’s also the Student Chapter Committee that serves as a liaison between BSCES and 10 Massachusetts college and university ASCE Student Chapters. This committee is comprised of a chair and at least one liaison that supports each of the 10 schools. YMG’s Student Chapter Committee members support chapters by providing information regarding scholarships, networking opportunities, career panels and other student-oriented resources to help foster their academic careers and professional development. YMG hopes to continue hosting the annual Student Chapter Officers’ Caucus and Student Night to continue building a network of young leaders and reward chapters for their annual success.
Events hosted by the YMG usually occur once a month and are mix of social/networking events, technical events, student events, and community service/volunteering events. Some of these events are jointly hosted by a BSCES institute chapter or technical group, which further expand the networking opportunities and generate the longevity and success of the organization. In the past year, YMG has hosted/co-hosted the following events:
Upcoming events to look out for include:
The YMG is also excited to team up with the Environmental & Water Resources Institute (EWRI) Boston Chapter and Transportation & Development Institute (T&DI) Boston Chapter for events in the spring and summer.
