Elizabeth Clark, PE, ENV SP, SITES AP, Stormwater Coordinator, MassDEP and BSCES Committee on Sustainability Chair
The BSCES Committee on Sustainability is looking for new members. Write to Sustain.Comm@BSCES.org if you are interested in joining. We meet monthly via Zoom to discuss sustainable initiatives.
Our goal is to increase awareness of and provide guidance in sustainability, resilience, and “green” design. We advocate for sustainable development and infrastructure to ensure protection of the “triple bottom line”: environmental, economic, and social conditions. The Committee brings awareness to the public and the civil engineering community on the importance of sustainable planning, design, and construction through events, newsletter articles, and advocacy. We also promote tools, certifications, and awards related to sustainable development in the built environment.
This February in collaboration with the Massachusetts institute of Technology (MIT) Concrete Sustainability Hub, the Committee on Sustainability hosted a panel on sustainable concrete that encompassed the entire life cycle: lower carbon production, “greener” concrete available now in New England, and potential future sustainable choices. Concrete is the most consumed material in the world next to water and it is estimated that it contributes 6% of the total human produced Greenhouse gas emissions.
We look forward to the BSCES Annual Awards Dinner in June where we will present the BSCES Sustainability in Civil Engineering awards.
We hope to hear from you!
