Scott Kibby, PE, Principal Engineer/Senior Associate, Mott MacDonald and Geo-Institute Boston Chapter Chair
As one of the nine ASCE specialty institutes, the Geo-Institute’s goals are to promote leadership in public policy, professional practice and project decision making, provide technical and career opportunities for members, promote new technologies and innovation, and deliver value to our members through conferences and publications. There are more than 60 G-I Chapters across the country and the Boston Chapter typically organizes and leads several activities and events such as sponsorship of geotechnical lectures, courses, and seminars. The local G-I also awards graduate and undergraduate scholarships from the Leo Casagrande Memorial Fund.
Currently, the G-I Boston Chapter Committee consists of seventeen geotechnical professionals from local consulting firms, specialty construction companies, and academic institutions, who proudly volunteer their time to serve the BSCES and the engineering community.
As we emerge from the restrictions and impacts of the pandemic we are actively planning in-person events for the spring of 2024. One of these events is the 5th Memorial Ladd Lecture. The Charles C. Ladd Memorial Fund was established in 2015 to support a lecture presented biennially by an eminent academic or practitioner on a topic related to soil behavior and construction on soft ground. This outstanding lecture was free to all attendees through donations to the Charles C. Ladd Fund. Donations to the fund to support future lectures can be made with check payable to BSCES with Charles C. Ladd Fund noted in the memo line. Check should be mailed to BSCES, Charles C. Ladd Fund, One Walnut Street, Boston, MA 02108-3616.
In addition to upcoming events, the G-I Boston Chapter held a day long symposium at Tufts University in May of 2023 titled “Transportation Geotechnics.” This day-long seminar was attended by over 50 geo-practitioners and focused on geotechnical works relating to roads, bridges and tunnels.
