The BSCES Board of Government is saddened to report the passing of BSCES Honorary Member John T. Christian. John, a professor of civil engineering at UMass Lowell, passed away on June 5 after a distinguished teaching, business and engineering career.
John received his Bachelor's, Master's, and PhD at MIT, and from 1966-1973 he was a professor of civil engineering there. In 1988 while he was working at Stone & Webster Engineering Corporation of Boston, BSCES elected him as an Honorary Member. As a practicing geotechnical engineer, he worked on projects involving earth dam evaluation and design, the evaluation of flow through porous media, nuclear power plants, solid waste landfills, foundation engineering, offshore facilities, mooring facilities, and pipelines. John pioneered the use of computer methods in geotechnical engineering. He co-authored the first general purpose computer program for the analysis of slope stability with circular and non-circular failure surfaces, among other publications. Click here to read more.
