As we shift indoors with the coming of colder weather, take time to appreciate the structures that civil engineers have built to protect and shelter us. In this issue of BSCESNews, we focus on “Structural Design.” Our featured article, written by Chris Pray (GEI), details the design and construction offshore material handling platforms in Perth Amboy, NJ. Brent Richard (VHB) summarizes the accelerated bridge construction of the Route 44 bridge over Route 24 in Raynham, MA. Don’t miss the video link showing the lateral slide! And in his Historic New England Infrastructure series, Michael Sullivan (CME) recounts the history behind the largest man-made stone structure in the Eastern U.S. and largest hurricane barrier on the East Coast – the New Bedford Hurricane Barrier.
In this issue, you’ll also find the Structural Engineering Institute (SEI) Boston Chapter Group Report from SEI Chair Scott Bruso (Weston & Sampson). The SEI group, like all others, has shifted to virtual events and continues to deliver high-quality technical content for BSCES members and the engineering community. BSCES President Bruce Jacobs gives us an update in his President’s Report, including a huge thank you to our sponsors and congratulatory messages for the 171st Annual (and first-ever virtual!) BSCES Section Awards. Bruce also wrote a member profile of Professor Peter Eagleson for this issue - check it out to learn more about Professor Eagleson’s many contributions to the field of civil engineering.
One question remains: how could I tie our Structural Design theme to my corgi puppy, Scout? Easy. Enjoy this picture of her with the Rose Wharf and partial Boston skyline in the background, taken back during the warm days of summer.
