Boston is an old city with a rich history, and with that comes old water and wastewater infrastructure that presents unique challenges. In 2021, BSCES established the Utility Engineering and Surveying Institute (UESI) Boston Chapter whose mission is to advance the utility engineering and surveying industry through collaboration, dissemination of technological advances, and raising public awareness. UESI Boston offers the opportunity to connect professionals from the local utility, pipeline engineering, and surveying industries for information sharing and networking. UESI Boston Chapter will help take lessons learned from the national level of UESI and apply them to Boston’s unique infrastructure.
Establishing an institute chapter during the Covid-19 pandemic has been challenging! Without in-person events, we have relied on webinars, email, and virtual meetings to communicate with the BSCES community. For the remainder of the year as in-person events resume, we will focus on actively recruiting local professionals to join UESI Boston Chapter to contribute their knowledge and to identify topics of interest for the local industry.
On May 18, 2022, UESI Boston Chapter and the Transportation & Development Institute (T&DI) Boston Chapter co-sponsored a webinar titled “Use of ASCE 38-02 and Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) for Better Design, Cost Savings, and Damage Prevention in Planning and Design”. Our year is not over yet as we plan additional webinars for the summer and early fall related to the mitigation of construction loads on existing pipelines.
These activities would not be possible without the dedication and support from our active UESI committee members, who serve on a volunteer basis. We’re always looking for new members to help run events and to bring new ideas to the table. If you’re interested in getting involved with the UESI Boston Chapter, please contact me at PDNardini@sgh.com or UESI@bsces.org for more information.
