New England Future City Competition Day
Sponsored by the BSCES Public Awareness & Outreach Committee
Saturday, January 21, 2017
MassDOT Headquarters, 2nd Floor, 10 Park Plaza, Boston, MA
The Future City Competition is a projectâbased learning experience where student teams, led by an educator and volunteer mentor, spend four months developing a virtual city (using SimCity), researching and designing a solution to a city wide issue (this year’s challenge—Public Spaces—asks students to include in their future city a distributed network of innovative, multi-use public spaces that serves the city’s diverse population), and building a scale model of their city using recycled material. In January, teams present their vision to a panel of volunteer judges. After the competition is over, student participants are not only prepared to be citizens of today’s complex and technical world, they are poised to become the drivers of tomorrow.
